Nah, most ‘motivational techniques’ are outbursts made by respective locker room leaders. They don’t wax poetic or get epic on their teammates. The team leaders are primarily getting the adrenaline flowing even more in the huddle. (Although I do agree with you to the extent that I didn’t get too excited whenever our locker room presence tried to rally the guys on the hockey team I played with.) Of course the coach can put the game into perspective before the game starts or at the start of the 4th quarter, the way Seahawks coach Carroll played an “us against the world” card with his team, and pump up his team. Still, there doesn’t appear to be too many of those to tire a player out. A coach can only pull up rhetoric a few times a season. Everything else is the little outbursts in the huddle to rally the troops.

A motivational speech is one that inspires you to ACT.

1. Choose an ACTION that you want your speech to promote – it could be about some aspect of human rights, saving the environment, how to lose weight, how to be a good friend, how to do well in school, how to quit smoking, etc.

2. Choose HOW you want to promote that action – you can do it by giving people an example to follow (some famous person from history, for example), by giving the history of the topic (like the history of some human rights movement), or by just plain instructing (giving steps for how to stop smoking). Also effective is if you include a personal story (like you went to the mall and were stopped by a homeless person, that made you emotional and now your speech is about homelessness).

3. Choose a topic YOU LIKE!!! Make it interesting for yourself, if you seem interested, so will the audience. Even if you can fake being interested, you have to do this speech anyway so you might as well have fun.

4. Organize it in a way that makes it easy to understand.

5. Write out a speech, make it HUMAN. Don’t be a walking textbook. Talk like you’re talking to a group of friends. Look up some really good speakers on YouTube, read some books (look up Dale Carnegie) and follow advice given by people who you think speak well. Remember, if you do exactly what they did, the least you can achieve is their level.

Yep, you can do what I do every first Saturday of every month (I do readings with a Shakespeare Society):
. Read over the play.
. Highlight your lines.
. Get a recording device.
. Get the appendices and Google up on your computer for Shakespeare – English translations if you get stuck.
. Record your queues and what goes on in the scene.
. Then record your lines in a way that is fun to say them and makes sense TO YOU. Use the appendices and Google if you get stuck.
. Once you’ve recorded it all, play it a few times a day and go over what’s happening in your head. You can do this while walking the dog, catching a bus, driving, cooking, whatever takes your fancy.
. Then turn up to rehearsals on time, apply what you’ve been practicing and if the director has anything he/she’d like you to change, incorporate it.
. Repeat until performance.

Finally & Most Importantly: Don’t take it all too seriously! Yeah, the problem with Shakespeare is that a lot of people w@nk off to it.
You know: “oh he was a genius” “master of language” “when he says this he doesn’t mean that”. They talk about the plays like he’s “fine wine” or “a type of cheese”. You enjoy Shakespeare in your own way and forget about the “elite views” attached to it. Chances are in the end you’ll have some who will enjoy what you do, some who won’t and audience members sitting their scratching their heads thinking “what does that mean” anyway.

I have not heard this term before, but I do see a major flaw in the idea.
In order to illustrate the flaw, I need to change it a little – bear with me…
Early Christians (as well as some later ones) have been known to ‘die’ for Jesus too… If they didn’t believe that Jesus was 100% real for them, they would surely not have considered dying for Jesus as an option.
Similarly, in order for a Christian to ‘lie’ for Jesus, that presupposes that they don’t actually have any faith in Jesus otherwise why would they need to lie?
You can’t ‘lie’ in all honesty order to support what you believe is true – the only time I can conceive of this happening is if someone was uncertain and a little naive in their faith and didn’t want to appear that way – having said that, we all make mistakes because we are human.
The idea of ‘lying’ for Jesus also presupposes, that because a human has ‘lied’, the whole idea is bogus – this in itself is a bit misguided. It is probably true that people have lied about all sorts of things that we know are actually true – it doesn’t make them false does it?
What I won’t accept is that the church systemically lies about Jesus, because like in the example above, what on earth would be the point?? I suspect the more arrogant atheists would say that is because Christians are either evil/stupid or both. If that’s what you choose to think, then I am quite sure nothing I can say will make any difference so good luck to you… (you need it)

OK I have read some of the responses above in a bit more detail, and think that there is a split view from the atheists on what this means:
1. Most seem to believe that Christians lie because they have no evidence, which is a bit strange (assuming people are prepared to embark on a course of action whilst KNOWING they are wrong), but that seems to be the crux of it.
2. A more intelligent view that identifies liars who masquerade as Christian, such as TV evangelists for whom personal gain is the motive. I would suggest that these individuals are simply lying for themselves as Jesus is not a beneficiary. I accept that people in category 2 certainly exist, but would object to them being associated with the name Jesus. They are lying for their ego/bank account/large house and car…
