Your Questions About Motivational Interviewing

George asks…

Husband on Parole and Unemployed?

My husband had a job a month ago and lost it due to his Supervisor saying that my husband did something, which he didn’t do. It was her word against his and he lost the job. His parole officer told him that he has a month to find another job.

He is working with several Employment agencies as well as going out and applying everywhere. He calls many places to see if they are hiring. Many places are having to let people go! He has had several interviews with some places who are hiring, but no one will hire him.

My husband has until this Wednesday to get a job or he goes back to prison, according to his PO. We aren’t sure if this is a “motivational tactic”.

He has a job for driving cars for an auction 3 hours, once a week. The money only pays for his gas to get there and back. He has documentation that he has been looking. We hope this is enough to keep him out of prison.

From my understanding of the laws and parole here, if you violate parole and it’s NON-Criminal, the PO goes to the parole board with the violation. If the board approves it as a violation, the parolee gets paper work stating he has a violation. If the Parolee gets 3 violations is 12 months, they go back to prison. If it’s a criminal offense, they go back without getting warnings.

Can one of the stipulation of Parole be if they are unable to get a job, they go back to prison? His parole paperwork says that he HAS to have a job.
He cannot do volunteer work. There aren’t any programs in my state to help people who are released from prison to get a job…no grants available.

I hope he isn’t being sent back due to the job market.

The Parole officer said that there is “NO EXCUSE” for him not to get a job. He said it in front of me as well…
He is looking for a job. He has applied to Wal-Mart, McDonalds, Dunkin Donuts, Salvation Army, Hotels, etc. He is working with 7 employment agencies.

My husband has not dropped the ball on his own responsibilities. He is doing everything humanly possible to find a job.

My husband WANTS a job and isn’t trying to get out of it.

He doesn’t care if he has to scrub bathroom floors with a toothbrush. He has not violated parole and is doing everything he is supposed to be doing. He just can’t get a job and hasn’t given up on finding a job.

admin answers:

First of all, if you get any rude answers , please ignore them.

I do not believe that ONLY a job will send him back, especially in todays economy. Have him keep proof , in a notebook of every job he applies for. And tell him to keep looking.
There are people at your district court that can best assist you. I dont know what he was in for, or charges, but i hope that he gets back on the “straight and narrow” permanently so you two can be happy.
Its hard to have that record and past, as in the case with the job , being fired, his word over the employers, of course , “once a criminal, always a criminal”, so society thinks. Just like every person in prison is guilty right? Wrong! ..
Good luck to you, i dont know what state your in, that wouldve been more helpful.
If hes been at auction awhile, maybe he could talk to his boss, if hes in good with him and ask for other hours, within the company, ..working on the lots or in registration or detailing the cars etc.
Not Massachusetts, taunton area is it?

Each state or prison, has people that are suppose to get him back into society, if they’re cooperating. He should have all that information. Again, speak to court and parole OFFICE, not just his parole officer, go above him
good luck to you, and even more so to him.

Note, His parole officer sounds like a jerk, I would go above him.
I would also seek free legal counsel from the court, and if by some chance he goes back, there are charges and petitions in which he can file against the state. (in fact, I would not “wait and see” what happens, I would look into all options now, the state, and federal government have a way of really screwing people over with their so called laws, and the general public, 90% of them, do not even know what their own rights are, or very little of them) again, good luck

Sandra asks…

Is it time to look for another job?

I am going to make this short as possible. I was hired at X amount of money salary with the motivational bonus of $10000 for performance within my job. Saying that that extra bonus for ++ performance is paid quarterly…..

Ok.. it’s July. No bonuses this year due to corporate decision due to company performing above budget. ( my job had NOTHING to do with financials.. ) But This has hurt my pocket book in a big way! My manager has been po’d like the rest of us.

I took a good look at my financials personally. I am a manager who is mondo responsible for all my employees. Yet.. I only make $1 that is one freaking buck higher than 2 of my employees.

I have an interview on Monday with another company. When they ask me my salary requirements I will be telling them the XXX amount which is what my current salary is plus the bonus … I think that is a good starting point..

Is it time to leave my old job????
I am going to be asking for my current salary and the 10k as a starting point. Where did I say I was going to lie about salary history???

admin answers:

Oh, it’s the right time to leave! Start interviewing but naturally, don’t quit w/o another lined up. I had my bonus denied for three years bcz the company didn’t perform to the goals. I understood that but what I failed to understand was how goals that were truly outrageous were allowed to be set anyway. The sales folks set them, and yet the product was not selling – they truly based them on ‘hope of tapping into the market’ but hey, they are in sales and although they didn’t even come close to selling the product they managed to sell the goal to the bigwigs. It was frustrating for all – you would have thought after the first year it would have been questioned.

As a manager, I don’t want to say I ‘counted’ on the bonus, but the potential (30% of my base) made me join that company. After the first denial and almost to the second, I started looking elsewhere.

I never came across an issue with how I listed it: Base salary _______ with bonus potential of ________. I made certain when asked what my requiremetns are that I gave myself a raise – which, honestly, you should do EVERY time you switch jobs – after all, they are asking what it would take to bring you on. You might place yourself out of their league but YOU know what YOU need to make YOU happy. I did get a couple of eyebrow raises when I told them what my range was and then what I was currently making but I held firm (nothing worse than being brought in at a bargain basement rate and then finding out, like you did, that you basically make the same as your teammates!)

All you need is one company to be willing to pay you and if you have demonstrated skills, chances are you will get what you want. Give yourself a bump in pay and investigate bonus potential.

Good luck!

admin answers:

He must abide by whatever his parole stipulates. I wouldn’t take the chance that they may change their mind. Does his parole officer know about his job driving cars?

Use your network to find work, consider day laborer jobs, temp agencies, minimum wage jobs, etc.

I hope your husband finds something. Be prayerful and hope for the best.

Lisa asks…

Master’s in Occupational Therapy?

I’m currently a senior (majoring in Psychology) at UC Irvine. My undergraduate work should be completed in Fall ’09.

I’m REALLY interested in applying to a MOT program. I’ve been looking into local schools (USC, CSDH, and SJSU) to find the most affordable tuition. I really like USC since I have family there. However, it’s soooo expensive, so I don’t think I should even bother to apply.

What can I do to improve my chances in getting in. So far, I have most of my courses (with the exception of Anatomy and Physiology which I plan to take in the Spring ’10). I have a GPA of 3.75. I have research experience. So far, I haven’t been able to find any volunteer work with OT’s :( Hopefully soon since CSDH’s application is due in September (By the way, do you think an OT will give me a recommendation letter after working a 2-3 months with them. I do plan to stay longer though.). Let me see…I think I can pull off a good essay. My interview skills are good. I’ve been studying for my GRE for the past few weeks. I plan to take it in 2 more months so I have time to study in the summer. I believe I have great qualities to be an OT (compassionate, helpful, nice, positive, motivational). I was first inspired to major in OT since I was a cancer patient 3 years ago and had to go through RT, OT, and PT (I don’t think I should write this down in my essay, right?).

What do you think? Which schools are affordable and shorter in lenght to complete? (I don’t mind going to a different state).

Can I get in? *hope so*

If you can give me any insight, I will really appreciate it. I need it!

Thanks!

admin answers:

Definitely tell about your experience as being a patient of an OT since that’s what you want to go into, OT schools like to hear about all the perspectives you have from being a patient, observer, student, etc. Just don’t ramble on about it, I think you have a good chance of getting in, I got in on a 3.2 gpa in Michigan but I had all my prerequisites done. Definitely go with a school you can afford, because after you graduate you have to pay off all those loans, eek! Good luck

David asks…

What are your favorite Pac quotes?

Please, i dont want something like “I ain’t a killa but don’t push me-revenge is like the sweetest joy next to gettin pussy” or “I bet you got it twisted you don’t know who to trust So many playa hating n!**az tryin to sound like us” (one of my favorites)

But I need more of motivational or inspiring lyrics such as “No matter how hard it gets, stick ya chest out, keep ya head up and handle it” (Me Against the World) or a simple quote like “If you can’t find something to live for, you best find something to die for” or “only God can judge me”
it doesn’t have to be long or complicated but it has to be meaningful

if u know what to say use it_if not, i suggest u go to the internet and find Quotes, Lyrics, ect. from songs to interviews and/or his poetry_See which one grabs your attention & i’ll see if it works for me

admin answers:

Okay these are from the songs of his that really grabs my attention personaly.

Quote 1-”We gotta start makin’ changes
learn to see me as a brother instead of 2 distant strangers
and that’s how it’s supposed to be”

Meaning 1- he’s saying that people have to make changes and learn to see eveyone as their own brother/sister..(have love for everyone even if there a stranger) and then he goes into (thats the way it should be)

Quote 2- “To live my life as an outlaw all along
Remain strong in this planet full of playa haters
In times of danger don’t freeze time to be a G” (these are two/three parts of a song)

meaning 2- to live as somone who can brake the rules..and make my dreams come true..and to stay strong..even if people are against me..in times of danger..dont hide/run/snitch stand up and be strong and forcefull

Quote 3-don’t be bad and play the game
Get mad and change.

Quote-4 Keep your mind on your money,
Enroll in school.
And as the years pass by
You can show them fools.

Yepyep we’ll thats like out of everything that stands out to me..from his music and stuff…

oh by the way the poem..that that comment said is real good comment

here’s the tupac poem

Did you hear about the rose that grew from a crack in the concrete?
Proving nature’s law is wrong it learned to walk with out having feet.
Funny it seems, but by keeping it’s dreams, it learned to breathe fresh air.
Long live the rose that grew from concrete when no one else ever cared.
