Your Questions About Motivational Interviewing

John asks…

Motivational Help?

I need some advice.

I use to work in the IT area making very good money. I did something that I knew would likely get me fired (it did). Since then, I have moved into an area that pays me 4.5 times less than I was making before.

I have been in this new field (not IT related) for 6 years. I am finally fed up and want to get back into IT, but am scared to death of my lack of exposure over the last 6 years. I feel as though I have nothing to offer.

These thoughts are giving me a phobia of not wanting to apply for jobs becasue I think it will be a waist of time and that I will not be able to handle the interview.

I would appreciate any comments, as I can’t figure out what the heck is going on with me.

You did something to get you fired because you were fed up – this was a deliberate act that got you the result you wanted.

And now you want to get back into IT? IT is a very large field, and one of the biggest changes that’s happened over the last 6 years is in the way its arranged. When I started in IT 20 years ago, one person could do everything, and this is so not the case now. What I suggest you do is set aside some time to figure out how the industry has changed – forewarned is forearmed. There are now many subscription mags available on the web – not a bad starting place.

I’ll give you a starter for 10 – were you in helpdesk, support, business analysis, programming, architecture, project management? Use wikipedia, figure out what the industry looks like now.
Where do you want to be in it?
What have you done over the last six years that compliments this ambition?
The one thing that IT is really crying out for is well rounded business talent, because finding someone who understands business as well as IT isn’t easy. And this is the main challange you will face if you want to make it big.

The fact that you’ve got an IT background and have been doing something else for 6 years can really work in your favour, once you’ve packaged your new experience in a way that a prospective employer can understand. Sell your new experience as business experience – get creative if you have to.

Interviews are a fantastic place to learn how the industry has changed, and I find most people are quite willing to talk about themselves, even if it’s you who are the candidate! In a couple of hours, you can really get up to speed on how things have changed, and even if you don’t get the job first time, it will set you up to get the next one, or the next one. Every interview you do will give you the experince of the language changes and structure changes you need to become comfortable enough to succeed.

So go get ‘em, and don’t take no for an answer!

Job interview tips. What should I do?

Do anyone have any job interview tips because I seem to do average at these job interviews. For instance, when you answer the interviewer, is it rude to move a bit like a motivational speaker moves when he/she talks or should I sit still with my hands on my lap? And when they ask, “is there anything you would like to know?” what do you recommend me to ask? What are questions, or answers, to avoid? Serious inquiries.

admin answers:

It is okay to move around when you talk. Just maintain the tone of your voice. Do not cross your arms or legs.arrive on time. Know something about the company and its background . What are the products that they sell? Try knowing the job description of the position you are aiming at so that you will have an idea about the job post— in case they will ask you questions about it. You can try this site for more help and info about job description. Just search bestjobdescriptions on the net. Good luck.

I started a teakwood kitchenware factory in Thailand, while working as fulltime as an English teacher. My aim was to get out of teaching kids.
I used my salary and savings and order deposit to finace start-up cost.
I risk losing my investment, but I can always go back to teaching – so I d say the risk is low.
